Midwife appt at 8:15. Everything seemed fine except for my complaints all of which were typical third trimester woes.
11 am: light pink mucousy discharge – texted midwife, rest and wait. Called mom and gave her a head’s up that it was probably nothing, but it might be. She was still in Richmond, but left immediately to head for Memphis.
1pm: light cramping, continued bed rest, contact back up Doctor for instructions. Googled pictures and info on babies born at 34 weeks. Prognosis good. Babies born 6 weeks early LIVE.
4pm: definite contractions, instructed to go to Covington office, changed to the Med. Meet Midwife there.
So scared. David and I drove to the med. I felt excited and scared. I didn’t know if I would have a baby or be put on bed rest.
Checked into triage.
Doctor checked and I was 5-6 cm dilated and 100% effaced. The clock was ticking to mature the baby as much as possible before it came.
They administered a steroid shot to mature the lungs and transferred me to a delivery room ASAP. Started a magnesium drip to slow contraction and an IV of penicillin to address any possible GBS since I hadn’t had the test yet. The goal was to slow labor enough to be able to administer another steroid shot at the 24-hr mark. Some doctors and nurses even seemed optimistic about my being able to stall out labor and go home.
Had to learn how to pee in a bed pan. Yep…that was fun. Missy (midwife) finally had the bright idea that I could squat over the pan. That not only made peeing not as gross but was the perfect way to get the pressure off my back for a minute.
Night was long and uncomfortable. Tried to sleep in the delivery bed hooked up to a zillion monitors. 3 decent contractions over night but other than that, nothing. I thought labor was slowing down. Kasha came in and flanked my body with pillows in an effort to make me comfortable enough to get some sleep. She is such a darling.
The noisy blood-letting lady came in to take more blood in the middle of the night, into our dark, sleeping room. She was annoying. Kasha got after her and refused to answer her inane questions about how she was doing and “shhh-ed” her several times.
